Briciole

Briciole is a very popular Italian trattoria, café bar and deli, all under one roof in Crawford
Street. There have been several restaurants or bars on this site since the original pub, the
Quintin Hogg closed. Briciole certainly seems to be the most successful. The menu
includes Italian classics as well as new dishes. The Italian staff are knowledgeable and
happy to help you and to recommend both food and wines. The room is pleasant with
scrubbed wood tables-a nice touch is using a drawer in the side of your table for your
wine and water, so leaving a clear space for your food. There is also seating outside in
Crawford Street and Homer Street which is very popular in the summer. In the modern
style, there are small plates and platters to share but it is easy to choose a two or three
course meal if preferred.
The menu is divided into types of food-cold roast meats, prosciutto and salami and
smoked fish for example. There are also daily specials. The wine list includes some unusual
wines as well as the usual varieties. We chose a Sardinian Vermentino, for example, which
went very well with our choice of roasted sea bass and sea bream from the daily specials.
Italian cooking relies on the qualityand flavour of the ingredients and if the fish we hadsimply roasted in foil with no sauce-is anything to go by, the chef does it well.
The menu is reasonably priced although the costs can add up if a lot of small plates are
chosen. Our lunch for three people cost £90for three courses each and a bottle of wine
which we thought was good value for a very enjoyable meal. A nice touch was a large
carafe of water and some good bread with olive oil while we were waiting for our first
courses.
If you enjoy proper Italian then I recommend Briciole. We will certainly go again.
